Using the Properties Box

Properties boxes present options that are related to menu commands. Similar to dialog boxes, they present the "properties" associated with an item you have selected. For example, the Properties box for a database indicates the database name, size, creation date, and other pertinent information. The Properties box looks like a dialog box, but it doesn't act quite the same. If you enter options in a dialog box, you must click OK or press Enter to accept your settings and apply them. Unlike changes you make in a dialog box, the changes you make in the Properties box are immediately applied. Also, you don't have to close the Properties box for the changes to take place.

Properties boxes are context sensitive—that is, depending on what you have selected or what task you're performing, the features in the Properties box change. When you're working with text, the Properties box shows text options. It shows workspace "properties" when you're working with the workspace. To know which options the Properties box is displaying, look at the title bar of the box (see Figure 3.1). The Properties For drop-down list box shows what feature the options modify. You can choose another feature from the drop-down list.
