Understanding Databases

There are many different uses for Notes databases. One database might hold customer information, whereas another might hold information about company projects, and still another might hold your mail. Even your email is a Lotus Notes database. Databases are like miniprograms or applications. Just as you might have multiple spreadsheet files with different formulas and calculations for solving various business problems, Notes databases are usually created to handle a specific business process, such as customer service calls, client tracking for sales, or expense reporting.

Although many Notes databases are created by Application Developers, the mail database is created automatically by Notes and comes with all three types of Lotus Notes clients previously mentioned. If you have Notes Mail installed, you can use only the Lotus Notes Mail database. If you use Notes Designer or Notes Client, however, you have a larger software program that includes more features than Notes Mail; with the Notes Client, you can use database applications that are created by Application Developers, and with the Notes Designer, you can be the Application Developer.
