Lesson 6. Creating Mail > How Lotus Notes Mail Works

How Lotus Notes Mail Works

Email is short for electronic mail. Simply put, it's mail that you create on your computer and send to someone over a network or the Internet. With Lotus Notes, you create email in a form called the mail memo form. When you click the Send button, the mail travels to the server and into the mailbox of the addressee(s). When they open their mail, they see the mail you sent. With Lotus Notes, the Domino server stores all the mailboxes of the users on that server.

If your Domino server has access to the Internet, you can send mail to people on the Internet. Mail that you send to the Internet first travels to your Domino server and then to the Internet. This might happen immediately or it might be on a scheduled basis, depending on how your administrator has configured your Domino server. If your server doesn't have access to the Internet, it's possible for you to set up Notes to send Internet mail directly from your computer.
