How Do Functions Work?

Although they all do different things, functions follow certain simple rules. When a function is the only thing in a cell on a worksheet, it starts with an equals sign, like any formula; then, the name of the function is entered. Finally, the arguments to the function-the information you give the function so it can come up with its answer-are contained within a set of parentheses. For example, consider the following function:

=SUM(12,25,34)
