Chapter 28. Understanding VBA Macros > Where Your Macros Are Stored

Where Your Macros Are Stored

In Excel 97, macros are not stored in a separate "macro file," but instead are part of the workbook you were in when you created the macro.

Note

In previous versions of Excel, macros were stored in a visible sheet in the workbook, called a module sheet. You could click the sheet tab for a module sheet, just like any other sheet, to view and edit the code in your macros.

Excel 97 stores the macros and other VBA code invisibly in projects within the workbook. The only way to see your code is by using the Visual Basic Editor. When you convert an Excel, version 5, or Excel 95 workbook to Excel 97, the module sheets are removed, and the code is moved to VBA projects automatically.
