What Is a VBA Macro?

Throughout the history of personal computing, many application programs have had macro programming facilities available. Generally, these macro languages have allowed a user of the program to record a series of actions, and play them back at a later time. In some programs, the macros are simply a sequence of keystrokes, such as those you would use to operate the menu commands of the program. In other programs, the macro language is more of a complete programming language, allowing the experienced user to use complex programming logic to create fully functional applications.

Microsoft Excel 97, as well as the other major applications in Microsoft Office 97, contains a powerful macro programming facility that combines the best of both worlds. You can easily record and play back macros, assigning the macro to be run when you press a convenient key combination, or when you click on a customized toolbar or menu command. The macros that you record are created automatically in the Visual Basic for Applications programming language, also known as VBA. You are not required to do any programming to work with recorded macros.
