What Is an Object?

The object model of Excel 97 describes the content and functionality of Excel. The content of Excel includes the application, workbooks, sheets, cells, and other items that together make up the material of Excel, along with the characteristics of those object, including colors, sizes, and other attributes. The functionality of Excel includes all the operations you can perform with Excel, including entering data into cells, opening and closing files, printing, and many other commands and actions of Excel.

All these items in Excel are represented by objects. An object is simply a way of thinking about is single item or group of related functionality in the application. For example, there is a Workbook object, representing the workbook and all its behaviors and characteristics. Some of the things you can do with the Workbook object are:
