Chapter 22. Mastering the Analysis ToolPak > Using Engineering Analysis Tools

Using Engineering Analysis Tools

Excel's Analysis ToolPak also provides some tools that are primarily of use to engineers. Anyone working with signal processing or time domain data can use the Fourier analysis tool to describe the types of frequencies common in the data. In addition, the sampling engine simplifies the process of sampling data for later analysis, as when you want to apply quality control procedures and extrapolate to determine whether a lot of manufactured goods is acceptable. The next two sections describe how to use these tools in more detail.

Fourier Analysis

Classically, Fourier analysis is used in signal processing to decompose a complex sine wave into its formants. For example, an equation can describe the oscilloscope output that represents a human speech stream. Fourier analysis can decompose the wave presented into separate waves, each one representing the band of frequencies that represent particular resonators in the human vocal tract.
