Chapter 2. Managing Workbooks, Windows, ... > Common Problems and Solutions

Common Problems and Solutions

File management can become a headache when things go wrong. Listed below are a few common problems users typically face and the solutions that can be applied.

Q1:When I try to save my file, Excel tells me I'm not using a valid file name.
A1: Make sure you're not using any of these characters to name files: ?\<>|/*';;.
Q2:I know I saved a file, but now I can't find it.
A2: Try conducting a search using the Advanced button in the Open dialog box. Follow the steps in the section "Hunting Down Excel Files" in this chapter.
Q3:The Open dialog box does not show my files listed.
A3: If you made any modifications to the file type, you may not immediately see the file listed until you select the format from the Files of Type drop-down list in the Open dialog box.
Q4:I forgot the password I assigned to a file.
A4: Sadly, there's no way to reopen the file without the original password. Always remember to write down the passwords you've created and keep them in a safe place.
