Searching for Files

If looking through the files and folders in the Open dialog box isn't producing the file you want, try the search features at the bottom of the box. You can search for a file by name, author, file type, and even the date the file was created. You can search for specific text or numbers found within worksheets. You can even use the data you entered into the Properties dialog box (see "Saving Workbook Summary Information" earlier in this chapter) in your search.

When entering search criteria, use the * and ? symbols as wild cards. For example, if you're looking for any file ending in the .xls file extention, type *.xls. Or, if you're looking for all files with the text BUDGET as part of the file name, type BUDGET*. Use the ? symbol to represent any one character. For example, type SALES?? to find files named SALES01, SALES02, and so on. To search for a file by name or partial name:
