Password-Protecting Files

If your workbooks contain sensitive data, you might want to protect the files from unauthorized use through the use of passwords. To assign a password to a workbook file, first open the file, then follow these steps:

  1. Display the Save As dialog box by choosing File, Save As.

  2. Choose the Options button to open the Save Options dialog box (see Figure 2.10).

Figure 2.10. The Save Options dialog box lets you add password protection to a file.

  3. To assign a password to the file, type a password in the Password to Open text box. You can use up to 15 characters in a password, including text, numbers, spaces, and symbols. You also can use upper- and lowercase letters, but remember that passwords are case-sensitive, which means you must use the exact same upper- and lowercase letters to open the file.

  4. Press Enter and the Confirm Password box appears, as shown in Figure 2.11.

  5. Enter the password exactly the same as before, and choose OK.

  6. Choose OK again to exit the dialog box and the password is assigned to the file.
