Chapter 2. Managing Workbooks, Windows, ... > Protecting Yourself from Macro Virus...

Protecting Yourself from Macro Viruses

Excel users today have an additional concern to lookout for-macro viruses. Macro viruses are a new kind of virus embedded in Microsoft Excel and Word macros. (Macro's are simply prerecorded commands that simplify a computer task.) Many of Excel's templates use macros, and if you're sharing files (via disk or e-mail), all it takes is one infected macro to infect your system. A virus can be activated by running an infected macro, and any workbooks you save with the infected macro from that point onward can be infected, too. Although Excel can't scan your workbook files for macro viruses, it can help you watch for them. When you attempt to open a workbook that contains macros, Excel displays a warning box, as shown in Figure 2.9.

Figure 2.9. The Macro warning box brings your attention to possible macro usage and the danger of macro viruses.
