Chapter 29. Introducing VBA Programming > VBA—What It Can Do for You

VBA—What It Can Do for You

VBA is the macro programming language for Excel 97, as well as for Word 97, PowerPoint 97, and Access 97. Earlier versions of each of these products used different macro languages, such as WordBasic, AccessBasic, and in the case of PowerPoint, there was no macro language at all until PowerPoint 97. Even Excel used a different macro language prior to the addition of VBA in Excel, version 5.0. This macro language has become known as the Excel 4.0 macro language, because it was the last version of Excel that used this earlier macro language exclusively.

Note

Outlook 97 uses a scaled-down version of VBA, called Visual Basic Scripting Edition, more commonly known as VBScript. To learn how to develop custom solutions in Outlook 97, see Chapters 27–29 (written by Helen Feddema) of Special Edition Using Microsoft Outlook 97 (also published by Que).
