Chapter 4. Formatting Your Worksheets > Formatting with Borders, Patterns, and ...

Formatting with Borders, Patterns, and Colors

Use Excel's border, pattern, shading, and color features to apply formatting techniques that effect overall worksheet appearance. These features can help add emphasis to important data or add polish to a report. There are a variety of combinations you can create with borders, patterns, and colors to format cells, ranges, column headings, and more. For example, you can combine a border with a shaded background, or you can use a pattern background with color text. Remember to keep your combinations simple; too many formatting effects can make your data illegible.

Although many of these formatting features look their best when printed from a color printer, you can still benefit from the effects when printing in black and white. Take advantage of Excel's preview feature to see how formatting appears before you actually commit the worksheet to paper.
