Chapter 4. Formatting Your Worksheets > Using Excel's Basic Formatting Tools

Using Excel's Basic Formatting Tools

There are a few universal formatting styles that are commonly used when polishing a worksheet's appearance, or any other document for that matter. Users want to be able to change the font and font size, alignment, and styles of data (bold, italics, and underline). Most of these formatting styles are available in all the Office 97 programs (including Excel), as well as other Windows-based applications. The successful employment of these particular formatting options can make the difference between data that makes an impact on the intended audience, or data that is lost in a sea of information.

Figure 4.1 shows examples of basic formatting applied to a worksheet. To organize and clearly identify column labels, try underlining the text. To keep your worksheets looking professional, center the titles across columns. Fonts, alignment, and styles play an important part in the look and feel of your data.
