Chapter 1. Excel: Quick Start! > Using Excel's Help Features

Using Excel's Help Features

With all of Excel's many features and on-screen elements, it's not always easy to remember which item does what or what procedure to follow to accomplish a particular task. Excel 97 offers an extensive help system you can tap into anytime you want to learn more about a task or feature. Many of the help tools are located on Excel's Help menu, including links to help pages on the Web. There's also a new animated help feature, called the Office Assistant, that provides an interactive way of finding help. The more you utilize Excel's many help features, the more you'll learn how to use the program itself.

Using and Customizing the Office Assistant

The Office Assistant is a new animated help feature that readily assists you with any questions or tasks you may have while using Excel 97. You can access the Office Assistant by opening the Help menu and selecting Microsoft Excel Help, pressing F1 on the keyboard, or you can click the Office Assistant button on the Standard toolbar (the button with a question mark icon). Once you've accessed Office Assistant, a message balloon appears and you can type in a question, conduct a search, or view tips about the particular feature you're using. You can even customize the appearance of the animated feature and make changes to the options associated with the feature.
