Chapter 1. Excel: Quick Start! > Using Excel Toolbars

Using Excel Toolbars

Excel's toolbars are full of shortcuts to commonly-used commands. For example, if you want to save your file, click the Save button on the Standard toolbar. This is much faster than opening the File menu and then selecting the Save command. Along with buttons, Excel's toolbars may also display drop-down lists and palettes. In some instances, a click on a toolbar button will open a dialog box offering you more choices pertaining to the command.

Note

If you're ever in doubt about what task a button performs, move your mouse pointer over the button, and the button's name appears. This is a ScreenTip. This won't work if the ScreenTip feature is turned off. By default, it's on when you first use Excel. If it is off, select View, Toolbars, Customize to open the Customize dialog box. Click the Options tab, then select the Show ScreenTips on toolbars check box. This turns the ScreenTips feature on again.
