Chapter 1. Excel: Quick Start! > Starting and Exiting Excel

Starting and Exiting Excel

Before plunging into the Excel program, you should first familiarize yourself with the various methods for starting and exiting the program:

  • For a straightforward startup, click the Start button on the Windows 95 taskbar, select Programs, Microsoft Excel. The Excel window opens onto your screen.

  • If you're looking for a faster startup, add an Excel shortcut icon to your Windows 95 desktop. Right-click a blank area of the desktop and select New, Shortcut. In the Create Shortcut box that appears (see Figure 1.1), type in the path to the Excel program, or use the Browse button to locate the Excel executable file.

Figure 1.1. Use the Create Shortcut dialog boxes to insert an Excel shortcut icon on your desktop.

Click the Next button to continue to the next dialog box where you can type in a name for the shortcut icon or use the default name, Microsoft Excel. Click the Finish button and the icon is added to your desktop To start Excel, double-click the shortcut icon.

If a shortcut icon isn't fast enough for you, you can choose to start Excel automatically whenever you start your computer. Simply place a copy of the Excel shortcut icon into the Startup folder (if you don't have an Excel shortcut icon, you can create one as instructed in the previous paragraphs). Open Windows Explorer and open the contents of the WINDOWS folder. Open the START MENU folder, then open the PROGRAM folder. Now hold the Ctrl key and drag the Excel shortcut icon from your desktop into the STARTUP folder (make sure the Explorer window is resized so you can see the Excel shortcut icon on the desktop).

  • You can also start Excel when you click Excel files in the Explorer window or the My Computer window. Locate the Excel file you want to open, then double-click to open Excel.
