Using Array Formulas

Array formulas are used to perform large calculations and return them as a single result or multiple results. Arrays are simply rectangular ranges of values or formulas that are treated as a group. What makes arrays useful is that they can perform powerful calculations in a small space. Instead of entering repetitive formulas throughout the worksheet, you can save memory by entering a single array formula that spans a range of cells, yet produces multiple results for every cell where you want a result to appear.

For example, an inventory worksheet might include a column of values listing prices and another column of values listing quantities. You might want to create an array formula that totals price and quantity values for each item in the inventory list. Instead of copying such a formula for each row and producing a single result, you can use an array formula that performs such a calculation for every item in the list. Take a look at Figure 3.25
