Chapter 23. Collaborating with Excel > How Do Different Excel Versions Interope...

How Do Different Excel Versions Interoperate?

Many features are new to Excel 97. By default, Excel workbooks are saved in Excel 97 format. If someone you work with is using an earlier version of Microsoft Excel and he opens a workbook saved in Excel 97 format, a message will be displayed recommending that he open the file as read-only. If he ignores the recommendation and saves the workbook in an earlier version of Excel, features and formatting available only in Excel 97 are lost.

You can prevent this feature and formatting loss if other users on your network are still working in Excel 95 or Excel 5.0. You can save your Excel 97 workbook in a special dual file format that can be read by all three products: Excel 97, Excel 95, and Excel 5.0. Excel 95 and Excel 5.0 have the same file format. Users of Microsoft Excel 97 can then continue to work in a workbook saved in the dual format without losing any features or formatting unique to this version.
