Chapter 32. Building Solutions with VBA > Designing a Complete Excel Solution

Designing a Complete Excel Solution

It is a mistake to think that writing extensive VBA code will be the only solution to creating a complete Excel solution. In fact, you should give a lot of thought to the design of your Excel workbook and the data, formulas, and other objects that make up the application, before you write the first line of VBA code.

While creating complete applications using Excel and VBA has the potential to involve a lot of complexity, both in workbook design and in VBA coding, a relatively simple example can be used to show the principles of automated application design in Excel. The application developed throughout this chapter is a rather common one, modeled after a simple checkbook register. The workbook allows the user to enter transactions in a check register and to generate reports based upon the contents of the register.
