Outlining Worksheets

Large worksheets often make it difficult to look at the big picture represented by the data. Sometimes you want to hide some of the detail and only look at totals, for example. Or, perhaps you want to hide the monthly or quarterly detail and look at annual totals. There are several ways to do this sort of thing in Excel, but the easiest way to handle it is to use Excel's outlining feature.

A worksheet outline lets you select ranges of data that you can easily hide or reveal. You can create multiple levels of outline levels so that if your data is organized with multiple levels (with subtotals and grand totals, for example), you can select just the level you want at any time. Both rows and columns can be outlined.
