Chapter 18. Building Scenarios and Outli... > How Scenario Manager Works

How Scenario Manager Works

Understanding how Scenario Manager works can illuminate for you how to best utilize it. For each defined scenario, Scenario Manager stores the scenario name, a comment, whether the scenario is protected or hidden, and the changing cell information. The changing cell information consists of a list of the changing cells, and the values that those cells should contain for that scenario. When you choose to activate a scenario, the Scenario Manager inputs those changing cell values into the specified changing cells, almost as if you had typed those values yourself.

Because Scenario Manager works by typing values into the changing cells, any formulas in those cells will be overwritten with the values Scenario Manager stores. Moreover, any formulas in your base worksheet model will be overwritten as you use Scenario Manager with the values you substitute in those cells. (For this reason, it's critical that you save a copy of your base worksheet model to a different file name before you begin using Scenario Manager.)
