Chapter 14. Building Excel Databases > Setting Up the Structure

Setting Up the Structure

After you've planned the information you need for the entire body of information available to you, you are ready to determine the structure of your database:

  • The first row of your database will contain column headings. Provide a unique name for each column of your database. This is the field name.

  • Determine which column of your spreadsheet you want to use for the first column of your data. The first column of your database doesn't necessarily have to begin in column A.

  • Set up columns so they are adjacent to one another.

  • Use a separate column for each field, or piece of information relating to individual records (or assets, to continue the previous example).
