Creating Map Charts

Included with Excel is a program that generates embedded maps called Microsoft Map. With it, you can chart data against geographical maps. For instance, you can chart sales against states, or countries, or population statistics, or just about any data that has a geographical component. Map-based charts can often help the reader to instantly comprehend geographically-based data.

When you create data to use with Microsoft Map, the first column of the data needs to contain the geographical data, which is a series of place names (cities, states, and countries). Figure 11.10 shows a sample worksheet from which an example map will be built.
