Chapter 11. Advanced Chart Topics > Handling Missing Data Points

Handling Missing Data Points

Many charts have missing data, and you need to be able to chart them accordingly. In some cases, you simply want the missing data to be skipped, while in others you want the missing data to be interpolated. And in still other cases you might even want to show missing data as being equal to zero.

To change how a chart handles any missing data points, first create the chart with the missing data. Then, with the chart active, choose Tools, Options and click the Chart tab (see Figure 11.24). Then select which of the three options you want to use to handle missing data points on that particular chart. As a general rule of thumb, Not Plotted works best with XY Scatter, Bar, Column, and Pie charts, while Interpolated works best with line charts or XY Scatter charts that use lines to connect each scatter point. You also can choose the Zero option.
