Lesson 14. Drawing Objects on a Slide > Working with AutoShapes

Working with AutoShapes

Drawing a complex shape with the rudimentary tools available to you can be frustrating. That's why PowerPoint comes with several predrawn objects, called AutoShapes, that you can use. To draw one of these objects, perform the following steps:

  1. Click on the AutoShapes tool on the Drawing toolbar. A menu of shape types appears.

  2. Click on the type of shape you want. For example, if you want an arrow, choose Block Arrows. The AutoShapes palette appears for that type of shape, as shown in Figure 14.2.

Figure 14.2. Select the shape you want from the AutoShapes palette.

  3. Click on the shape you want to draw.

  4. Move the mouse pointer to where you want a corner or the center of the shape to be.

  5. (Optional) While drawing the object, hold down one or both of the following keys: Ctrl to draw the shape out from a center point, or Shift to draw a shape that retains the dimensions shown on the AutoShapes palette.

  6. Hold down the mouse button and drag the mouse to draw the object.

  7. Release the mouse button. The shape appears, as shown in Figure 14.3.
