Lesson 17. Working with Templates > Creating a Template from a Document

Creating a Template from a Document

Sometimes you will find it useful to create a template based on an existing Word document. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Open the document that you want to base the new template on.

  2. Use Word's editing commands to delete any document text and formatting that you do not want to appear in the template.

  3. Select File, Save As to open the Save As dialog box (see Figure 17.2).

  4. Click the Save as Type drop-down arrow and choose Document Template from the list. The Save In box automatically changes to indicate the Templates folder.

  5. If appropriate, select the folder where you want the template saved by double-clicking its name.

  6. Type a descriptive name for the template in the File Name text box.

  7. Select Save.
