Lesson 3. Basic Editing Tasks > Paragraphs in Word

Paragraphs in Word

The idea of paragraphs is important in Word because certain types of formatting apply to individual paragraphs. In Word, you end one paragraph and start a new one by pressing. Word inserts a new, blank line and positions the cursor at the beginning of it.

On your screen, the result may look the same as if word wrap had started the new line, but the difference is that Word has inserted a paragraph mark. These marks are normally invisible, but you can display them by clicking the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Standard toolbar. Click the button again to hide the marks. This tool is very useful when you need to see exactly where the paragraphs begin and end in your document.
