Lesson 13. Advanced Style Techniques > Automatic Style Assignment

Automatic Style Assignment

When you press Enter to start a new paragraph, Word normally assigns to the new paragraph the same style that is assigned to the first paragraph. There may be times, however, when you want paragraphs of a certain style to always be followed by a differently styled paragraph. For example, say you have created a Section Heading style. Because a section heading is never followed by another section heading, but always by regular text, save yourself time and effort by specifying that paragraphs with the Section Heading style always be followed by a paragraph with the Normal style. Here's how:

  1. Click Format, Style to open the Style dialog box. If necessary, select the desired style in the Styles list.

  2. Click the Modify button to open the Modify Style dialog box (see Figure 13.1).

  3. Click the Style for Following Paragraph drop-down arrow and select the style you want assigned automatically to the following paragraphs.

  4. Click OK to return to the Style dialog box, then click Close.
