Working with Matrices

The Matrix template palette includes several vectors and matrices of predefined sizes. You can also select one of the template symbols in the bottom row of the palette to open a Matrix dialog box. In this box, you can specify the dimensions of the matrix or vector, and also control several other matrix characteristics.

To insert a matrix template, click the Matrix Template button (the last button on the right in the bottom row). Then click the template you want. The templates in the first three rows of the palette insert matrices and vectors of fixed dimensions directly in the equation. Selecting a template from the last row of icons opens the Matrix dialog box (see Figure 24.8), where you can specify the dimensions of the matrix and make several other selections, including alignment, column widths and row heights, and the type of partition lines you will use. To control the spacing between rows and columns, use the Spacing dialog box that is displayed when you choose Format, Spacing.
