Creating Styles

The process of using styles of your own involves two steps. First, you create the style, specifying formatting choices like paragraph indentations, line spacing, font, and font size. Then you apply that style—along with all your formatting choices-to other characters or paragraphs in your document.

You can create paragraph styles in two ways: by example (using the Formatting toolbar or a keyboard shortcut) or by menu command. Creating a style by example is a good method for a beginner to use; because creating a style by example is so easy, many advanced users also prefer this technique. Alternatively, using a menu command gives you more options, including creating character styles, and isn't difficult when you understand the concept of styles. (See "Creating a Styles with a Menu Command" later in this chapter.)
