Using the Style Gallery

Each document you create is based on a template. When you create a new document, the styles that are part of the template you select are copied into that document. Each template contains a set of standard styles, most of which are available with all Word's templates. Styles in one template may differ from those in another. For example, Heading 1 in the Normal template uses Arial 14-point, whereas in the Professional Fax template, Heading 1 is Arial MT Black 11-point. You can use Format, Style Gallery to preview and then change the appearance of a document by switching the style definitions to those of another template.

You can choose from any of the document templates that appear in the New dialog box when you start a new document. You'll find templates in the following categories: fax cover sheet, legal pleading, letter, memo, report, resume, newsletter, and Web page—and, of course, any existing templates from Word 7. Many of Word's templates fit into one of three families:
