What Are Web Pages?

A Web page is a simple text document. When opened inside Web browser software such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer, that simple text document displays text, graphics and hyperlinks to other documents. Clicking a hyperlink takes the user to another document on the Internet or company intranet.

The Internet and intranets are networks that make information easily accessible, even between different types of computers with different capabilities. Instead of having to use arcane networking commands, you can view pages of information by typing in a simple address for a page. This address is known as a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). A URL for a location on the World Wide Web might look like:
