Using Outline Headings for a Table of Contents

If you need a table of contents, Word can build one from the outline. Word constructs tables of contents by accumulating outline headings and their page numbers.

To create a table of contents from outlining, choose Insert, Index and Tables. Chapter 31, "Creating Indexes and Tables of Contents," goes into detail on how to use the Indexes and Tables dialog box, shown in Figure 21.8, which you can use to create a table of contents like that shown in Figure 21.9.
