Chapter 21. Organizing Content with an O... > Promoting and Demoting Headings

Promoting and Demoting Headings

When you promote a heading, you raise its level in the outline. You can promote a Heading 3 to a Heading 2, for example, to make the indent smaller. Demoting does just the opposite. When you promote and demote headings, Word for Windows assigns the appropriate heading style for that level.

Using the Mouse to Promote or Demote Headings

You can use the mouse to promote or demote headings in two ways. One method uses the buttons in the Outline toolbar. By using this technique, you promote or demote only the selected heading. In the other method, you drag the heading's + or - icon left or right until the heading is at the level that you want; with this technique, you promote or demote the heading and all subordinate text.
