Part V: Mastering Special Features > Automating with Field Codes

Chapter 22. Automating with Field Codes

  • Use fields to automate repetitive work

Fields operate in the background to automatically insert information such as dates or numbers.

  • View fields

While you work in Word, you can view either field codes or the results of the field.

  • Insert fields

In many cases, Word inserts fields for you, or you can insert fields whenever you choose.

  • Edit and format fields

Move quickly between fields, edit or delete fields, and format the appearance of field results.

  • Update fields

As field information changes, you can update the fields to reflect those changes; alternatively, you can lock fields to preserve the results you currently see.

Fields are a necessary, but often invisible, part of such features as a table of contents, an index, or a table of authorities. Fields also perform such simple tasks as inserting the date or displaying a data-entry box. They also display the text edit box, check box, and drop-down list used in forms. The value you gain from using fields comes from the repetitive work they can automate for you.
