Deleting, Copying, and Moving a Footnote or Endnote

To delete, copy, or move a footnote or endnote, work with the reference mark—not the actual note text. If you delete, copy, or move the actual note text, the reference mark is left in place where it was originally inserted. When you delete, copy, or move a reference mark, Word automatically renumbers all numbered notes.

To delete a footnote or endnote, you must select the reference mark for the footnote and press Delete or Backspace. Deleting the note's text leaves the reference mark in the text.
