Chapter 13. Formatting the Page Layout, ... > Working with Page Numbers

Working with Page Numbers

Long documents are easier to read and reference when the pages are numbered. In Word, you can insert a page number quickly, and Word formats it as a header or footer for you. That way, you can use all the techniques for working with headers and footers to work with page numbers. See Creating Headers and Footersearlier in this chapter.

Inserting Page Numbers

Page numbers can appear at the top or bottom of the page and can be aligned to the center or either side of the page. When you insert a page number, Word includes a PAGE field and frames the page number. Because of the field, Word can update the page number even if you move the page to another portion of the document. Because of the frame, you can move the page number anywhere within the header or footer.
