Part II: Formatting Documents > Working with Columns

Chapter 12. Working with Columns

  • Set up columns in a Word document

Determine the quantity and length of columns, and learn to make equal or unequal column widths.

  • Work in newspaper columns

Type and edit text, and format column appearance.

  • Modify columns after setting them up

Make changes to the number, size, and spacing of columns and balance the flow of text in columns on the last page of the document.

Sometimes what you have to say isn't best said in line after line of margin-to-margin text. Often you can help keep your reader interested and make your prose look a little more inviting by dividing the text into columns. Research has shown that text of newspaper column width is much faster to read. Columns not only make information more attractive, but also more readable.
