Formatting Characters

Word 97 offers no shortage of techniques for applying character formatting. If you have a mouse, you can format using tools and lists on the Standard and Formatting toolbars. If you prefer the keyboard, you can access formatting commands from the menu. You also can take advantage of many helpful mouse and keyboard shortcuts.

Whether you choose to format text before or after you type it, you must remember that most character formatting commands toggle on and off—you turn them on the same way that you turn them off. If you select and boldface a word and then want to remove the boldface, select the word a second time and choose the Bold command again. Toggling applies when you use buttons on the toolbars or keyboard shortcuts to apply or remove formatting. Formatting with the menu commands varies slightly.
