Chapter 9. Formatting Characters and Cha... > Inserting Special Characters and Sym...

Inserting Special Characters and Symbols

You can include many special characters in your document. Symbol fonts such as Symbol and Zapf Dingbats, for example, contain dingbats (decorative characters such as bullets, stars, and flowers) and scientific symbols. You can use foreign language characters such as umlauts (¨) and tildes (~), or ANSI characters such as bullets (•) and em dashes (—), wide hyphens used in punctuation. You can also use invisible characters such as discretionary hyphens (which appear only when needed) and nonbreaking spaces (which prevent two words from separating at the end of a line).

Two techniques give you access to special characters. You can use the Symbol dialog box, which shows a keyboard of special characters to choose from, or you can use a series of special keystrokes.
