Part I: Everyday Word Processing > Using Editing and Proofing Tools

Chapter 7. Using Editing and Proofing Tools

  • Using Find and Replace

Use Find and Replace to search for and replace text, formatting, styles, and special characters.

  • Checking your spelling

Check the spelling of words in your document against words in your own custom dictionary or the dictionary in Word 97. Automatic spell checking can be turned on to check words as you type them.

  • Checking your grammar

Check your document for grammatical errors then correct them using suggestions provided by the grammar checker.

  • Using the Thesaurus

The Thesaurus provides a list of alternative terms that have the same meaning. This is useful when you think you're using a term too often.

  • Proofing in other languages

You can check the spelling, hyphenation, and grammar of documents written in another language by selecting the appropriate language dictionary.

  • Counting words

Count the number of pages, words, characters, paragraphs, and lines.

By now, you're probably familiar with most of the basics of Word 97—how to create, edit, and save your documents. You can also use many tools to make entering text easier, ensure accuracy, and make sure that your document reads well.
