Chapter 37. Customizing and Optimizing W... > Making Menus, Toolbars, and Shortcut...

Making Menus, Toolbars, and Shortcut Keys Globally Available

If you find that a template has menus, toolbars, and shortcut keys that you use frequently, you can make them available without using the Organizer to transfer them to the NORMAL.DOT template. (The Organizer is a feature described in Chapter 6, "Using Templates and Wizards for Frequently Created Documents.") Instead, copy the template file (DOT extension) containing these features into the \WINWORD\STARTUP directory. The template files are usually located in folders within the PROGRAM FILES\ MICROSOFT OFFICE\TEMPLATES folder.

Make sure you copy a template into the StartUp folder. If you move a template out of the Template folder, it will not appear in the New dialog box when you choose File, N ew. Be careful not to copy more templates into the StartUp folder than you really need, as it will increase the time it takes to start Word.
