Creating Numbered Headings

When you number headings, Word looks for different heading styles to determine how to number each heading paragraph. Paragraphs formatted with the heading 1 style, for example, are numbered with the first outline level (I., II., III.); paragraphs with the heading 2 style are numbered with the second level (A., B., C.), and so on. Word provides seven predefined outline numbering formats for these different levels and enables you to establish your own custom numbering formats.
