Updating, Unlinking, or Locking Fields

As you learned earlier in the chapter, many field codes update automatically. You can update some codes manually, however. In some cases, you don't want field codes to update; for example, you may have a letter that begins with an automatic date field. You do not want the date on a completed letter to change the next time you open the letter.

Another instance in which you want to control updating is when you have data from an application such as Microsoft Excel linked into your Word document. You probably do not want the link refreshed each time you update the document—you may not know at that time whether the data in the source Excel worksheet is correct. Using the methods described in the following sections, you can update the document without updating the Excel data, and then return later to update just the Excel data.
