Chapter 22. Automating with Field Codes > Understanding the Basics of Fields

Understanding the Basics of Fields

Fields are hidden codes you type into a document or insert by using commands from the Insert menu. You normally see the results of fields, such as dates, page numbers, text linked to other documents, or mail-merge data. You can also see the field code for an individual field or for all fields in a document.

If you have used worksheet functions in Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3, you are familiar with the concept of fields. Fields are similar to functions. Most worksheet functions are mathematically and financially oriented; Word fields are oriented toward words, document processing, and mail-merge functions.
