Editing and Deleting Cross-References and Captions

Cross-references and captions are fields; by default, you see in your document the result of the fields. You may see, for example, a cross-reference such as Editing Cross-References or a caption such as Figure 3. If you display fields, however, rather than field results, you see field codes, such as {REF _Ref270669594\* MERGEFORMAT } or { SEQ Figure \* ARABIC }. Word uses fields so that it can update cross-references and captions if the information changes.

You can edit either the field result or the field code. Editing the field result is the same as editing text; however, the next time the field code is updated, the editing will be lost unless you unlock the results as described in Chapter 22, "Automating with Field Codes."
