Creating Captions

Captions help readers reference the illustrations you include in your document. In Word, a caption includes a label, a number, and (optionally) a chapter number. A caption may read, for example, Figure 7 or Table II-ii. You can type additional text after the label and number.

When you create a caption, you can select from a list of preexisting labels such as Figure or Table, or you can create your own labels. You can select from a list of predefined numbering styles, such as 1 2 3, A B C, or I II III. You can place a caption above or below your illustration.
