Part VII: Advanced Topics > Linking to Other Applications

Chapter 23. Linking to Other Applications

by Brian Reilly

  • Exploit links to and from many other applications

Linking to data in other applications eliminates the need for retyping or updating changes twice.

  • Create links to Word and Excel

Word makes great tables and terrific outlines; Excel lets you summarize numbers easily. Using both can make you more productive.

PowerPoint 97 has added a host of new linking opportunities to this version which makes it very easy for you to link information across documents, even if you don't know how to program. As in earlier releases of PowerPoint, PowerPoint 97 supports Object Linking and Embedding (OLE), and is enhanced to include the capability to link to graphics files. More importantly, PowerPoint 97 adds the capability to create HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) links to presentation objects, which enable you to quickly make non-sequential jumps to other slides, presentations, documents, and even to other Web sites from your own home page.
